As Nigeria prepares to mark its 66th Independence anniversary, the Federal Government has assured citizens that ongoing economic reforms will not come at the expense of vulnerable Nigerians.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, gave the assurance at a news conference, saying the administration remains committed to protecting lives and property while tackling terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and oil theft.
He said the anniversary theme, “From Reforms to Stability: Consolidating Nigeria’s Renewed Hope for Shared Prosperity”, reflects the government’s focus on economic stability and shared prosperity.
Akume also urged Nigerians to uphold democratic values and said the media has a constitutional responsibility to inform citizens and hold leaders accountable.
“The media in particular has a constitutional duty to inform the public and hold leaders accountable, inform the public correctly and fairly”.
Meanwhile, Akume launched an online discount platform for serving and retired military personnel, veterans and corps members.
The platform, developed by the Defence Headquarters in partnership with Zinox Group, is expected to go live on October 1, 2026, as part of efforts to improve the welfare of members of the Armed Forces and their families.
