Norway’s King Harald V Dies At 89, Son Haakon Ascends To Throne

Norway’s King Harald V has died at the age of 89, bringing an end to a more than three-decade reign that saw him become one of Europe’s most respected and enduring monarchs.

The Royal Court said Harald died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet at 6:35 a.m. local time on Friday, August 28, 2026.

His death followed a prolonged period of ill health. The monarch had been hospitalised earlier this month and was being treated for haemolytic anaemia before developing a bacterial infection in his bloodstream. His condition deteriorated sharply on Thursday, prompting members of the royal family to gather at his bedside.

Harald’s death has triggered a period of national mourning in Norway, with the royal flag lowered at the palace in Oslo as citizens gathered to pay their respects.

Born in 1937, Harald became king in January 1991, following the death of his father, King Olav V. His accession marked the continuation of a Norwegian royal tradition that had been established after the country became an independent kingdom in 1905.

Over more than 35 years on the throne, Harald developed a reputation for being a modern, accessible and unifying monarch. He was widely admired for his ability to connect with ordinary Norwegians and for his role in representing the country during periods of national tragedy and crisis.

His reign also reflected a gradual modernisation of the Norwegian monarchy. Harald’s 1968 marriage to Sonja Haraldsen, a commoner, was considered a significant departure from traditional European royal practice and helped reinforce his image as a monarch in touch with contemporary Norwegian society.

Harald was also known for his passion for sport, particularly sailing. He represented Norway in sailing at three Olympic Games and remained closely associated with the sport throughout his life.

In recent years, however, his public duties were increasingly affected by declining health. He experienced several hospitalisations and medical setbacks, including the implantation of a permanent pacemaker after falling ill during a private trip to Malaysia in 2024.

Despite his health problems, Harald remained committed to the monarchy and repeatedly rejected suggestions that he should abdicate. He continued to serve as Norway’s head of state, with Crown Prince Haakon increasingly taking on official responsibilities during periods when his father was unable to do so.

Following Harald’s death, Crown Prince Haakon, 53, immediately became Norway’s new monarch and took the regnal name King Haakon VIII. His wife, Mette-Marit, became queen, while their daughter, Ingrid Alexandra, became crown princess and heir apparent.

Haakon had already served as regent during several of his father’s periods of illness and is therefore expected to provide continuity as the Norwegian royal household enters a new era.

Harald’s death comes at a difficult moment for the Norwegian royal family, which has faced a series of controversies and health challenges in recent years. Nevertheless, the late king remained one of the monarchy’s most popular figures and was widely regarded as a stabilising presence in Norwegian public life.

His passing closes a significant chapter in Norway’s modern history. After decades as a familiar figure at home and abroad, King Harald V leaves behind a legacy defined by longevity, modernisation and a strong connection with the Norwegian people.
