Nigeria Lists N47.36bn Sovereign Green Bond on NGX, FMDQ

DMO says new bond issuance will support climate-focused projects and strengthen Nigeria’s green finance market….

The Debt Management Office has announced the official listing of its 18.95 per cent N47.36 billion Series III Sovereign Green Bond due in June 2030 on the Nigerian Exchange Limited and FMDQ Securities Exchange Limited.

In a statement released on Thursday, the DMO said the latest green bond issuance reflects the Federal Government’s continued push to finance environmentally sustainable projects and support Nigeria’s transition toward a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy.

According to the agency, the sovereign green bond is specifically designed to raise funds for projects that address climate challenges while encouraging sustainable economic development across the country.

The DMO explained that the Series III issuance marks the third Sovereign Green Bond floated on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria, reinforcing efforts to expand climate-focused financing instruments within the domestic capital market.

“The Green Bond is an attestation to the DMO’s commitment to providing funds needed to finance green projects that support Nigeria’s commitment towards achieving a low-carbon and climate-resilient society,” the statement noted.

The agency added that the listing on NGX and FMDQ is expected to improve liquidity for investors while also promoting price transparency in the secondary market.

Beyond funding environmental projects, the DMO said the issuance is aimed at increasing visibility for ethical and climate-conscious investment products in Nigeria’s financial system.

According to the Office, the initiative also creates additional opportunities for investors seeking instruments that align with sustainability and responsible investment goals.

The DMO further reiterated its commitment to expanding the range of government-backed securities available in the domestic market as part of broader efforts to deepen Nigeria’s bond market and attract more categories of investors.

Nigeria first entered the sovereign green bond market in 2017, becoming one of the first African countries to issue climate-focused debt instruments targeted at financing environmentally sustainable infrastructure and development projects.
