Lagos State Gov’t Sets Higher Bar for University Admission with 185 UTME Cut-Off

Admission standards have been raised in Lagos State as the government introduces a new UTME cut-off mark of 185.
Authorities announced that candidates who score below 185 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) will not be admitted into any of its three state-owned universities.

The Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, disclosed this on Wednesday during a ministerial briefing at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, held to mark the third anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term.

He also dismissed the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board’s (JAMB) minimum cut-off mark of 150, describing it as too low for Lagos institutions.

Sule stated that the state will maintain higher academic standards and will not admit any candidate scoring below 185.

He added that Lagos is not educationally disadvantaged and therefore has no basis for lowering its admission requirements to align with other regions.

According to him, the government remains committed to expanding access to higher education while maintaining quality, noting that the number of state-owned universities has increased from one to three.

He also disclosed plans by the Sanwo-Olu administration to establish a University of Medicine and Health Sciences in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.
