More than 300 landowners in Lagos have received over ₦3.1 billion in compensation from the state government for properties acquired for public infrastructure projects.
Presenting the cheques in Alausa, Ikeja, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described the payments as the government’s legal and moral obligation, stressing that “this is not an act of charity, but a fulfilment of our responsibility to citizens whose lands were acquired in the public interest”.
Sanwo-Olu said all claims underwent enumeration, professional valuation and verification to ensure that only legitimate beneficiaries were compensated. He also assured residents that the acquired lands would be used solely for strategic infrastructure projects and “will not be diverted for personal interests”.
The governor urged beneficiaries to invest the funds wisely for long-term financial security, while assuring them of continued support from the Lagos State Lands Bureau on documentation and related matters.
Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat said the exercise reflects the administration’s commitment to honouring its obligations, maintaining that development should always be accompanied by fairness, transparency and adequate compensation for affected property owners.
