A uniform structure for Nigeria’s civil service is what former President Goodluck Jonathan is advocating, with a call for harmonised salaries and career structures across federal and state services.
Jonathan made the call in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, during the foundation-laying and fundraising ceremony for the secretariat complex of the Bayelsa State Association of Retired Permanent Secretaries.
He said the quality of personnel in the Bayelsa public service compares favourably with their federal counterparts, recalling that he introduced Grade Level 17 for directors during his tenure as governor of the state.
The former president also said the proposed secretariat would provide a platform for retired permanent secretaries to continue contributing to public service.
The Bayelsa State Government, represented by the Head of Service, Ebiye Sawyer, pledged support for the project.
The complex, estimated at 500 million naira, is expected to be completed within two years.
