U.S. President, Donald Trump, has announced a ban on CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House, accusing the outlets of publishing what he described as fake news and unfavourable coverage of his administration.
Trump announced the decision on his social media platform, saying the outlets were being barred from the White House with immediate effect. He also warned that other media organisations could face similar restrictions.
Speaking later in the Oval Office, Trump defended the move, accusing the three outlets of producing inaccurate reports and calling for what he described as more honest news coverage.
CNN condemned the decision, saying its White House team would continue its “fair and accurate reporting” and arguing that the U.S. Constitution protects journalists from government interference.
Politico also said it would continue covering the White House fairly and would defend its First Amendment rights against any attempt to restrict its access.
The move adds to growing tensions between Trump and sections of the U.S. media during his second term.
The administration has previously restricted access for Associated Press journalists over the news agency’s refusal to adopt Trump’s preferred name for the Gulf of Mexico. The AP challenged the decision in court, with the case still pending.
Trump has also taken legal action against several other media organisations, while his administration has been involved in disputes over media regulation and access.
