Lagos turned its attention to one of its most defining royal chapters on Sunday as King Kosoko: The Battle for Lagos premiered at IMAX Cinema, Lekki.
The historical epic, produced by Teqsus Studios, drew traditional rulers, members of the Kosoko royal family, Nollywood actors, cultural custodians and other notable guests to the premiere on August 23, ahead of its nationwide cinema release on August 28.
The gathering underscored the cultural weight of a film centred on Oba Kosoko and the political struggles that shaped Lagos during a turbulent period in its history.
King Kosoko: The Battle for Lagos follows the story of the Lagos monarch and the power struggles surrounding his reign. The film explores political rivalries, trade interests, shifting alliances and the relationship between Lagos and the Benin Empire.
It also examines the influence of external forces during the colonial era, while touching on the wider consequences of the transatlantic slave trade and the struggle to protect Yoruba identity and Lagos’ sovereignty.
At the heart of the story is Kosoko’s leadership and political manoeuvring as he confronts competing interests, betrayal and attempts to alter the balance of power in Lagos.
The film was directed by Adebayo Tijani and produced by Ayo Ajayi and Segun Ololo Kosoko, with Marc Adebesin as co-producer.
Its cast brings together several established names in Nigerian cinema, including Femi Adebayo, Tina Mba, Odunlade Adekola, Femi Branch, Jide Kosoko, Yinka Quadri, Dele Odule, Gabriel Afolayan, Adeniyi Johnson, Sola Kosoko, Aisha Lawal and Kola Ajeyemi.
Beyond its cinematic appeal, the production seeks to reconnect contemporary audiences with a significant chapter of Lagos’ political and cultural history.
The filmmakers have positioned the project as a portrayal of heritage, leadership and resistance, using the story of Oba Kosoko to revisit the forces that shaped the city.
With the Lagos premiere now concluded, King Kosoko: The Battle for Lagos is set for a nationwide cinema release on Friday, August 28.
