JAMB Warns Universities Against Issuing Admission Letters

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has warned universities and other tertiary institutions against issuing admission letters to candidates, insisting that only the board is legally authorised to issue official admission letters in Nigeria.

The Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, gave the warning on Thursday, October 15, 2026, when he received a delegation from Veritas University, Bwari, Abuja, during a courtesy visit to his office.

Aina said JAMB was statutorily empowered to issue official admission letters to candidates seeking admission into universities, polytechnics and colleges of education across the country.

He expressed concern that candidates often accept admission letters issued by institutions as genuine, even when such documents do not comply with the established admission process.

The registrar consequently urged institutions involved in the practice to desist, stressing that they had a responsibility to ensure that candidates obtained the appropriate admission documents from JAMB.

He recalled that the Federal Ministry of Education had directed all tertiary institutions to process admissions through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS), warning that admissions conducted outside the platform were illegal and invalid.

According to him, no institution is permitted to substitute its own admission letter for the official document issued by JAMB after a candidate has accepted an offer of admission through CAPS.

Aina further explained that only admissions processed and recognised through CAPS would be accepted for purposes such as mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

He urged tertiary institutions to comply strictly with the established admission guidelines to protect candidates from being misled and to ensure the validity of their admissions.
