HSN Marks World Hypertension Day in Sokoto

The Hypertension Society of Nigeria (HSN) joined the global community in observing World Hypertension Day with a powerful message focused on early detection, healthy living, and improved access to healthcare.

The event, held in the Conference Room of the Sokoto State Ministry of Health, brought together healthcare professionals, government representatives, and members of the public.

This year’s theme, “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer,” highlighted the critical importance of routine blood pressure checks and lifestyle modifications to prevent severe complications such as stroke, heart attack, and kidney failure.

In his keynote address, HSN President, Simeon A. Isezuo, underscored the urgency of addressing hypertension often referred to as a “silent killer” which continues to claim countless lives due to late diagnosis and poor management.

“Hypertension is no longer a disease of the elderly,” he stated. “We are increasingly seeing cases among young adults, driven by stress, unhealthy diets, and sedentary lifestyles.”

Isezuo also called on both state and federal governments to subsidize hypertension medications and integrate routine screening into primary healthcare services across the country.

Sokoto State Commissioner for Health, Umar Faruk Abubakar, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to combating non-communicable diseases. He announced plans to roll out expanded community health campaigns, including free blood pressure screening and counseling at all state health facilities.

Health professionals at the event advised the public to adopt preventive measures such as reducing salt intake, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol consumption, and engaging in regular physical activity to lower the risk of developing high blood pressure.
