Frank Mill, 1990 World Cup Winner with West Germany, Dies at 67

Frank Mill, a celebrated figure in German football and a member of West Germany’s 1990 FIFA World Cup-winning squad, has died at the age of 67, his former clubs Fortuna Düsseldorf and Rot-Weiss Essen confirmed on Tuesday, August 5.

Mill passed away following complications from a major heart attack he suffered in May 2025, which he never fully recovered from.

Though he didn’t make an appearance during the 1990 World Cup in Italy, Mill was an integral part of the title-winning squad under Franz Beckenbauer and earned 17 international caps for West Germany during his career.

He also won Olympic bronze at the 1988 Seoul Games and captured the DFB-Pokal title with Borussia Dortmund in 1989. Over his club career, Mill amassed more than 120 Bundesliga goals, turning out for clubs including Borussia Mönchengladbach, Dortmund, and his hometown side, Rot-Weiss Essen, where his professional journey began.

In a heartfelt tribute, Rot-Weiss Essen described Mill as “a legend, a role model, and a true ambassador of German football.”

Mill is the second member of West Germany’s 1990 World Cup squad to pass away, following Andreas Brehme, who scored the winning goal in the final against Argentina and died earlier in 2024.
