Finidi George: Rivers United Will Keep Pressure on Remo Stars 

Rivers United head coach Finidi George has expressed confidence that his team will continue to mount pressure on Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) leaders Remo Stars, as they aim to overtake them and secure a second league title.

The 2022 NPFL champions narrowed the gap to just five points after a crucial 1-0 victory over Remo Stars on Sunday in Port Harcourt. 

The decisive goal came in the 84th minute, when Bolu Sholumade found the back of the net with a well-placed header, securing all three points in the highly anticipated top-of-the-table clash.

Remo Stars, however, have a chance to widen the gap once more when they face Lobi Stars in a rescheduled fixture set to take place today (Wednesday) in Enugu. 

Despite Remo’s opportunity to increase their lead, Finidi remains undeterred. He emphasized his team’s focus on delivering strong performances in both home and away fixtures as the season winds down with six matches remaining.

“After this game, we have to see how we can pick up wins on the road and try to close the gap,” Finidi said after Sunday’s win.

“We will also be watching their results closely while continuing to pile the pressure on them.”

He added,

“Our aim is simple — keep winning and keep the pressure on Remo. We’ll take it game by game and see how the season unfolds.”

Finidi, a former Nigerian international, took charge of Rivers United at the beginning of the current campaign after a brief stint as Super Eagles head coach.

The former Ajax winger had earlier returned to Nigeria in 2021 to manage Enyimba, guiding them to their ninth NPFL title in 2023. He now hopes to replicate that success with Rivers United — a club formed through the merger of his former teams, Sharks FC and Dolphins.
