The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has urged local government chairmen to ensure increased allocations to councils translate into better services and improved living conditions for residents.
Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, represented by Director of Public Affairs Wilson Uwujaren, made the call at the maiden Annual National Conference of Local Government Council Chairmen and Traditional Rulers Councils in Abuja.
Olukoyede said the commission would continue to promote transparency and accountability at the grassroots, stressing that local government resources should be used to meet the needs of communities.
President Bola Tinubu, represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, also urged council chairmen to prioritise primary healthcare, basic education, rural roads, safe water, food production and support for small businesses.
The EFCC chairman said the commission recovered more than ₦1.233 trillion between October 2023 and the period covered by its recent stewardship account, including funds returned to government agencies and other beneficiaries.
He added that the commission was strengthening its fight against economic crimes linked to national security, including terrorist financing, illegal mining, cybercrime and money laundering.
