In a tragic turn of events, eleven people, including a pregnant woman, have lost their lives in a brutal late-night shooting in KwaMakhutha township, south of Durban, in one of South Africa’s deadliest recent mass shootings.
The attack unfolded shortly before 11 p.m. on Tuesday, when heavily armed assailants reportedly stormed a residential property, gathered those inside and opened fire. The gunmen later set a vehicle at the scene ablaze before escaping.
Three other victims survived the attack and are receiving medical attention, while police investigators pursue leads aimed at identifying and apprehending the perpetrators. Authorities in KwaZulu-Natal are yet to establish a motive for the bloodshed.
The killings have left the KwaMakhutha community grieving and have once again drawn attention to South Africa’s persistent gun-violence crisis, particularly in townships where armed crime, gang conflicts and the circulation of illegal firearms remain major security concerns.
