ECOMIG, GAMBIAN SECURITY FORCES LAUNCH BREAST CANCER AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

The ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG), in collaboration with the Gambian Defence and Security Forces (GDSF), has launched a week-long breast cancer awareness campaign to promote early detection and encourage access to appropriate treatment.
The campaign, held from October 19 to 22, 2026, at the Gambia School of Nursing and Midwifery in Banjul, formed part of activities marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month, popularly known as Pink October.
The initiative began with a route march through the principal streets of Greater Banjul to sensitise residents to breast cancer and the importance of early detection.
The march was followed by an official launch ceremony attended by representatives of the ECOWAS Permanent Mission, ECOMIG and the Gambian Defence and Security Forces.
In his welcome remarks, the ECOMIG Force Commander, Colonel Aliou Tine, highlighted the significance of the campaign in promoting awareness of breast cancer and encouraging collective action against the disease.
Delivering the keynote address, the Special Guest of Honour, Assistant Inspector General of Police Amie Nyassi, described breast cancer as a major public health concern affecting millions of people worldwide.
Nyassi stressed the importance of early detection, noting that identifying the disease promptly and providing appropriate treatment significantly improves the chances of successful outcomes.
She urged individuals, communities and relevant institutions to unite in the fight against breast cancer through increased awareness and timely medical intervention.
The campaign underscores ECOMIG and the Gambian Defence and Security Forces’ commitment to supporting public health awareness and promoting community engagement in The Gambia.
