Benfica Expels Five Club Members Following Champions League Racial Misconduct

SL Benfica has taken decisive disciplinary action by stripping five individuals of their club memberships following a series of “racist-driven” incidents during the first leg of their Champions League knockout playoff against Real Madrid. The Portuguese giants announced the permanent bans after an extensive internal probe into the events of February 17, 2026, at the Estádio da Luz. The club’s executive board confirmed that the sanctioned supporters were found to have violated the fundamental “values and principles” of the institution through discriminatory behavior in the stands, leading to the maximum penalty of expulsion under the club’s statutes.

The match itself was marred by a high-profile confrontation shortly after the 50th minute, when Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior reported being targeted by a racial slur. The Brazilian forward identified Benfica’s Argentine winger Gianluca Prestianni as the source of the abuse, prompting a 10-minute suspension of play as the referee activated FIFA’s official anti-racism protocols. While Prestianni has consistently maintained his innocence, the incident escalated when supporters in the home section allegedly directed offensive gestures toward the Madrid star. Tensions remained high even after play resumed, culminating in an object being hurled from the crowd that struck Vinícius on the arm as he prepared to take a set piece.

“Benfica informed that it has suspended the memberships of five members following the initiation of disciplinary proceedings that led to the application of the maximum sanction stipulated in club’s statutes, which is expulsion. An internal investigation initiated after the match between Benfica and Real Madrid, held on 17 February, and the adoption of inappropriate behaviour in the stands, of a racist nature, incompatible with the values and principles that govern the club. Benfica reaffirms that it does not tolerate any form of discrimination or racism and will continue to act firmly when behaviours undermine the values of the club.”

In the aftermath of the first leg, Benfica manager José Mourinho faced widespread criticism for his handling of the controversy. The veteran coach sparked backlash—notably from former Real Madrid midfielder Clarence Seedorf and the anti-discrimination group “Kick It Out”—by suggesting that Vinícius’ exuberant goal celebration had incited the crowd’s hostility. Despite the club’s defensive stance regarding their player, UEFA eventually intervened, handing Prestianni a provisional one-match suspension. This forced the Argentine to sit out the return leg at the Santiago Bernabéu, where Real Madrid ultimately secured a 2-1 victory to advance 3-1 on aggregate.

The fallout from the tie has left a lasting shadow over both clubs. Vinícius Júnior, who scored in both legs of the playoff, was subjected to a hostile reception from travelling Benfica fans during the second leg in Madrid, underscoring the ongoing volatility surrounding the fixture. By enacting these expulsions, the Benfica hierarchy has signaled a commitment to distancing the club from the “disgraceful” scenes in Lisbon, even as legal and ethical debates regarding the on-field exchange between Prestianni and Vinícius continue to circulate within the European football community.
