The All Progressives Congress (APC), says lessons must be drawn from its loss in the 2026 Osun State governorship election, with internal divisions and overconfidence identified as key factors behind the defeat.
APC chieftain, Farouk Aliyu, said the party failed to secure the full support of its members, particularly those who disagreed with the choice of its governorship candidate.
“We did everything humanly possible to win the election. There is a lot of internal wrangling among our members in Osun State. There are people who were not happy with the choice of our candidate”, Aliyu said.
He said some party members also underestimated Governor Ademola Adeleke and relied too heavily on the influence of the federal government.
“Some thought the federal government would just come in and write the results. Our members and supporters took Adeleke and his movement for granted”, he said.
Aliyu said the APC must address its internal disagreements and ensure that candidates enjoy broad support within the party before future elections.
He described the outcome as a wake-up call ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that “APC defeated itself in Osun State”.
The party chieftain also commended President Bola Tinubu for allowing the election to proceed without federal interference and praised INEC for its handling of the results.
