Babangida Mourns Victims of Mokwa Flood, Calls Tragedy an ‘Act of God’

Former Nigerian Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), has described the recent flood disaster in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, which claimed the lives of over 200 people, as deeply unfortunate but an act ordained by God.

Babangida made the remarks while receiving a delegation from the Niger State Government led by Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba, who paid him a Sallah homage at his Uphill residence in Minna.

Speaking during the visit, the former Head of State expressed his condolences to the people of Mokwa and the entire state over the tragic incident. He urged residents to remain prayerful and committed to seeking divine comfort for the bereaved families and repose for the souls of the departed.

“What happened in Mokwa is unfortunate, but it is ordained by Allah,” Babangida said. “It is beyond human control, and that is why we must all continue to pray for the souls of those we have lost.”

He also used the occasion to commend Governor Umaru Bago’s administration for its ongoing development initiatives across the state, encouraging the government to sustain the momentum. Babangida assured the delegation of his continued support and prayers.

In his remarks, Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba said the delegation’s visit was primarily to seek Babangida’s blessings and fatherly counsel during the Eid celebrations. He noted that the government was aware of the retired General’s concern over the Mokwa incident and appreciated his constant role as a stabilizing and guiding figure in the state.

Garba further emphasized that the people of Niger State and Nigerians at large remain grateful for Babangida’s dedicated service to the nation, assuring him that the present administration will continue to uphold the values and legacy he represents.
