Four years after the death of veteran Yoruba actor Babatunde Omidina, popularly known as Baba Suwe, his daughter, Alimat Omidina, has recalled the final conversation that preceded his death.
Alimat, a model and content creator, shared the memory on X on Saturday while commemorating what would have been her father’s 68th birthday.
In a tribute, she reflected on the absence of her father during what would ordinarily have been a day of celebration.
She wrote that the occasion felt different without the gatherings, food and her father in a new shirt, adding that she wished she had spent more time creating memories with him.
Alimat also revealed that Baba Suwe had spoken about his own death shortly before he died.
According to her, the actor told her two days before his death that he would die, but she did not take the statement seriously at the time.
She said she laughed off the comment because she believed he was joking.
Her account changed the emotional weight of the memory when she recalled what happened the following day.
Alimat said she was asked to return home after her father’s condition deteriorated. By the time she arrived, he was no longer able to speak.
She said he died about an hour later.
Baba Suwe died on November 22, 2021, at the age of 63.
The actor was widely recognised for his comic performances in Yoruba-language films, with credits including Iru Esin, Baba Londoner, Oju Oloju and Baba Jaiye Jaiye.
His career made him one of the familiar faces of Yoruba cinema, particularly through his distinctive comic roles.
Alimat is one of the children of Baba Suwe and his late wife, actress Omoladun Omidina, popularly known as Moladun. Moladun died in 2009.
In her birthday tribute to her father, Alimat prayed for Allah’s mercy and for him to be granted Jannatul Firdaus.
Her remembrance has since prompted messages of sympathy from social media users, many of whom also reflected on the loss of both her parents.
