Argentine player Lucas Trejo has been plunged into tragedy after his wife and two children died in the devastating twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela, according to his club.
Club Sport Marítimo La Guaira confirmed on Sunday that Trejo’s wife, Yanina, and children, Aaron and Ainhoa, were among those killed when powerful quakes hit the country earlier in the week.
Reports indicate that the 38-year-old defender had been attending a training camp in Caracas when the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes struck on Wednesday evening. He reportedly rushed back to his home in La Guaira, where he was met with widespread destruction.
According to US media, Trejo spent days searching through the rubble before rescue teams later recovered the bodies of his family members.
The club expressed its grief in a social media post, saying, “Club Sport Maritimo La Guaira deeply mourns the irreparable loss of our player’s wife and children,” alongside a family photo.
It added, “Lucas, you are not alone. Your family at Maritime La Guaira is with you.”
The US Geological Survey described the disaster as a rare “doublet,” with the two major earthquakes occurring within 39 seconds of each other. Venezuelan authorities say nearly 1,500 people have died, while thousands remain missing.
Several footballers have also been affected by the tragedy, including youth international Yimvert Berroteran, as well as players Víctor Palacios and Razan Sijaa. The partner of Héctor Bello also reportedly died while shielding their child during the disaster.
