The Ogun State Police Command has formally arraigned Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the December 2025 collision that killed two of Anthony Joshua’s closest associates. Adeniyi appeared before a Sagamu Magistrate Court on Friday, January 2, 2026, where a magistrate adjourned the proceedings until January 20 to facilitate further investigations.
DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed that the 46-year-old faces multiple charges stemming from the fatal incident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The legal action follows the tragic events of December 29, 2025, near the Danco area, which resulted in the deaths of 36-year-old British-Nigerian personal trainer Kevin Latif Ayodele and 36-year-old British strength and conditioning coach Sina Ghami. Both victims served as integral members of the former world heavyweight champion’s training camp. Adeniyi, a veteran of Joshua’s Nigerian logistics team, underwent questioning at the state police headquarters in Abeokuta after receiving medical clearance from a Lagos hospital on New Year’s Eve.
Preliminary police reports suggest that Adeniyi allegedly exceeded the 65mph speed limit when a sudden tyre blowout during an overtaking maneuver caused him to lose control of the vehicle. The Lexus, registered as KRD 850 HN, subsequently impacted an illegally stationary truck loaded with soya beans on the hard shoulder. The severity of the collision instantly killed Ghami and Ayodele, while Joshua, who occupied the rear seat, miraculously survived with only minor injuries.
“The driver was released after treatment for minor injuries and was then taken to the state police headquarters for questioning. He is in a stable condition and was able to provide us with his version of events that led up to the crash,” a police source stated earlier this week.
The arraignment proceeded on Friday despite the holiday schedule, with the court granting the defendant bail set at ₦5,000,000. Joshua himself was discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, late Wednesday after doctors certified his fitness to continue recuperation at home. Before his discharge, Joshua and his mother visited a funeral home in Lagos to pay their respects before the victims’ remains were repatriated to London via Istanbul.
Governors Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State released a joint statement praising the medical professionalism at Lagoon Hospital and thanking President Bola Tinubu for his active support. The tragedy occurred just ten days after Joshua’s high-profile knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami. While global sports figures like Victor Osimhen have sent condolences, police continue to hunt for the driver of the stationary truck who fled the scene following the impact.
