Amas Obasogie Rejects Match-Fixing Claims Amid Tanzanian Club Suspension

Nigeria international goalkeeper Amas Obasogie has issued a vehement denial regarding allegations of match manipulation that have surfaced in the Tanzanian Premier League. The 26-year-old shot-stopper, who previously earned acclaim with Bendel Insurance, finds himself at the center of a sporting integrity probe after his club, Singida Black Stars SC, announced a three-month provisional suspension on Friday, February 27, 2026. The disciplinary action was triggered by suspicions surrounding the outcome of two specific fixtures: a CAF Confederation Cup encounter against Flambeau du Centre and a domestic league match against Namungo FC.

In a formal rebuttal, Obasogie categorized the goals conceded in the aforementioned matches as genuine “footballing errors” rather than a calculated attempt to influence the results. The goalkeeper, who was a member of the Super Eagles’ bronze-medal-winning squad at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, emphasized that his professional reputation and national team status are too significant to jeopardize through illicit activity. He has expressed a firm commitment to clearing his name and is reportedly preparing to present his defense before the club’s disciplinary committee in the coming days.

I state clearly and unequivocally that I have never engaged in match fixing and will never do so. The goals conceded in the CAF Confederation Cup match against Flambeau du Centre and the NBC Premier League fixture against Namungo FC were the result of footballing errors, not deliberate misconduct. I accept full responsibility for my performance; however, mistakes on the field must not be mistaken for match manipulation.”

The suspension of the Nigerian goalkeeper coincides with similar disciplinary measures taken against his teammate, Ugandan international Khalid Aucho, although Aucho’s three-month ban pertains to separate issues of absenteeism and general misconduct. For Obasogie, however, the stakes are considerably higher due to the gravity of the match-fixing accusations. He remains adamant that his on-field lapses—specifically a late-game handling error against Namungo—were purely technical in nature and consistent with the unpredictable risks inherent in professional goalkeeping.

As a national team goalkeeper representing the great nation of Nigeria, I fully understand the severe consequences of match fixing. My integrity, reputation, and career are invaluable to me. I have sworn never to bring the game of football, my club, or my country into disrepute. I am ready and willing to appear before any disciplinary committee to defend myself and clear my name.”

As the investigation unfolds, the Nigerian football community and Singida Black Stars supporters are awaiting the committee’s findings to determine whether the allegations hold merit or if the errors were, as Obasogie claims, simply unfortunate moments in a high-pressure environment. For now, the goalkeeper remains sidelined, focused on navigating the legal and professional hurdles required to restore his standing in the East African top flight.
