Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya withdrew before their fourth-round match due to health concerns, and eighth seed Maria Sakkari advanced to the Miami Open quarterfinals without striking a ball on Monday.
After losing in the third round in Indian Wells due to a stomach condition that kept her out of practice for several days, Kalinskaya, the 22nd seed, traveled to Miami.
With victories against ninth-seeded Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia and Wang Xiyu of China, the 25-year-old Kalinskaya advanced to the Miami round of 16 without dropping a set.
“I’m so sorry I was really looking forward to play today, but unfortunately my health doesn’t allow me. Thank you for your support,” said Kalinskaya.
Sakkari, who lost to world number one Iga Swiatek in the Indian Wells final, will next face the winner of Monday’s clash between fourth seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan and American 17th seed Madison Keys.
