Vanuatu Earthquake: 6.3-Magnitude Tremor Strikes Off Coast

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Vanuatu in the South Pacific.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the tremor was recorded 102 kilometres, or 63 miles, northeast of Norsup in Malampa Province, at a depth of about 10 kilometres.

There were no immediate tsunami warnings following the quake, while no casualties or significant damage had been reported in the immediate aftermath.

Authorities were continuing to assess the situation across the remote island nation and monitor for possible aftershocks.

The latest tremor adds to a pattern of seismic activity in the region. Vanuatu recorded a magnitude 6.0 earthquake west-southwest of Sola in July, while several smaller tremors have also been recorded across the island chain in recent months.

Vanuatu lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone of intense volcanic and seismic activity surrounding much of the Pacific Ocean.

Its location near major tectonic plate boundaries makes the island nation particularly vulnerable to earthquakes and volcanic activity.

The country’s geohazards monitoring network continues to track seismic activity across Vanuatu and surrounding waters.

For now, authorities have reported no major casualties or damage from the latest earthquake, but monitoring remains ongoing.
