The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, is pushing back against growing questions over the eligibility of its 2027 governorship candidate, Kingsley Chinda, following a recent Supreme Court judgment.
The controversy stems from the apex court’s September 24, 2026 ruling, which addressed the statutory requirements political parties must meet in submitting their membership records to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, ahead of primary elections.
Under Section 77, subsections 5 and 6 of the Electoral Act, parties are required to submit a verified register of their members to INEC no fewer than 21 days before conducting their primaries.
The ruling has since triggered debate over whether its interpretation of the Electoral Act could have implications for Chinda’s candidacy in the 2027 Rivers State governorship election.
However, the Rivers APC says the judgment does not invalidate Chinda’s nomination, as questions continue to emerge over the legal effect of the ruling on the party’s candidate.
