Niniola Opens Up on Late Husband’s Role in Her Music Journey, Says He Refused Her Career Break

Nigerian singer Niniola has spoken emotionally about the impact of her late husband, Michael Ndika, on both her personal life and music career, describing him as her strongest supporter and guiding force.
Ndika, who served as Chief Executive Officer of the African music platform NaijaReview, passed away on May 19, 2026 at the age of 44.
Speaking in a video shared during a memorial gathering held in his honour, Niniola said her relationship with him played a major role in shaping her growth as an artist and as an individual.
She revealed that Ndika consistently encouraged her to stay in music, even at moments when she considered taking a break from her career. According to her, he strongly believed in her talent and was determined to see her succeed.
Niniola described him as deeply involved in her daily life and emotional well-being, saying his presence was constant throughout their relationship. She added that coping with his death has been extremely difficult.
Reflecting on their marriage, she referred to it as a “love story,” noting that Ndika supported her from the beginning of her career journey and helped build her confidence as an artist.
She said he once told her he would turn her into a star, describing him as the “engine” behind her success while she remained the public face and voice of her brand.
According to her, even when she considered stepping away from music, he discouraged the idea and urged her to continue pursuing her passion.
“Michael did everything for me,” she said. “He was the engine, I was the face and voice. Even when I wanted to take a break from music, he didn’t allow it. He believed in me from the start.”
Niniola added that she is still coming to terms with the loss, describing her late husband as one of the most important people in her life and a central figure in her personal and professional journey.
