Ojukwu Urges Politicians to Preserve Democracy, Honour June 12 Sacrifices

The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Dr. Tony Ojukwu (SAN), has called on Nigerian politicians to appreciate the sacrifices made by citizens in the struggle for democracy and to take deliberate steps to preserve the country’s democratic gains.

Ojukwu made the call during a press conference in Abuja organised by the NHRC in collaboration with the Prof. Nwosu Centre for Democracy and Human Rights to herald the 2026 commemoration of June 12 Democracy Day in honour of the late Prof. Humphrey Nwosu.

He said the significance of June 12 goes beyond the remembrance of a historic election, stressing that it represents the resilience, courage, and determination of Nigerians who fought for democratic governance and the protection of fundamental rights.

According to him, political leaders and elected officials have a responsibility to safeguard the democratic ideals for which many Nigerians made sacrifices.

“Politicians in Nigeria should appreciate the sacrifices made by fellow Nigerians for democracy and do all they can to preserve it,” Ojukwu said.

The NHRC boss noted that democracy thrives when the rights of citizens are respected and when institutions operate transparently, fairly, and in accordance with the rule of law.

He emphasized the need for continuous commitment to democratic principles, including accountability, electoral integrity, citizen participation, and respect for human rights.

Ojukwu also highlighted the contributions of the late Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, former Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), whose role in the conduct of the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election remains widely acknowledged as a landmark in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

He said the annual commemoration provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s democratic progress, honour the memories of those who contributed to the struggle for democracy, and renew their commitment to building a more inclusive and accountable society.

The 2026 June 12 Democracy Day activities, he added, will feature engagements aimed at promoting democratic values, good governance, and the protection of human rights across the country.
