June 12: Tinubu to Deliver Joint Address to National Assembly on Democracy Day

A joint address to the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu will form part of activities marking Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day anniversary on June 12.

The announcement was made on Tuesday during the inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) set up to organise the national celebration. The committee was inaugurated by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, at the Shehu Shagari Complex in Abuja.

Akume said the presidential address would be a major highlight of the approved programme for this year’s commemoration, which celebrates Nigeria’s return to democratic rule. He said Democracy Day remains a moment to honour the sacrifices of pro-democracy activists, especially those involved in the June 12, 1993 struggle, and to recognise the legacy of the late MKO Abiola.

According to him, the event also provides an opportunity for government to showcase efforts aimed at strengthening democratic institutions and advancing national development amid ongoing economic challenges.

Akume urged members of the committee to begin work immediately, noting the limited time left before the celebration. He added that this year’s programme would reflect national realities while maintaining fiscal discipline.

Activities lined up for the commemoration include a world press conference on June 4, special Juma’at prayers on June 5, and an interdenominational church service on June 7. A public lecture is scheduled for June 9, followed by youth- and women-focused programmes on June 10. The celebration will conclude with a presidential broadcast and gala night on June 12.
