NIMC Raises Alarm Over Fake NIN Correction Portal, Warns Nigerians Against Phishing Scam

Commission says fraudsters are using deceptive social media posts and malicious links to target personal data, urges citizens to use only approved channels for NIN updates…..

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has issued a fresh warning to Nigerians over a fraudulent online scheme claiming to offer free corrections and modifications to National Identification Number (NIN) records.

The commission said a social media message currently circulating online, which advertises a so-called “free NIN correction portal,” is fake and designed to steal personal information from unsuspecting members of the public.

In a public advisory released on Tuesday, NIMC described the message and its accompanying links as a phishing scam aimed at deceiving users into divulging sensitive personal data.

According to the commission, the fraudulent links have no connection to its official systems and should be avoided by all Nigerians.

“NIMC warns the public against a fraudulent social media post claiming a free ‘Correction Portal’ is open via malicious links. This is a phishing scam,” the agency stated.

The commission reassured citizens that the National Identity Database remains secure and protected against unauthorized access, stressing that there has been no breach of its systems.

NIMC urged Nigerians not to click on suspicious links or respond to unsolicited messages offering identity-related services outside officially approved platforms.

The agency emphasized that all requests for NIN data modification, correction or updates should be processed only through its authorized channels.

Individuals seeking to correct personal information linked to their NIN were advised to use the commission’s official self-service portal or visit accredited enrollment and modification centres across the country.

The warning comes amid increasing concerns over cyber fraud and identity theft, with scammers increasingly exploiting social media platforms to impersonate government agencies and lure victims into revealing confidential information.

Experts have repeatedly cautioned that phishing attacks often rely on fake websites, urgent messages and offers of free services to trick users into surrendering sensitive data such as identity details, passwords and financial information.

NIMC urged members of the public to remain vigilant and verify information through its official communication channels before taking any action.

The commission also encouraged Nigerians to report suspicious messages, websites or online advertisements claiming to provide NIN-related services outside approved platforms.

As digital identity systems become increasingly important for accessing government services, banking platforms and telecommunications services, authorities say public awareness remains one of the strongest defenses against identity fraud and cybercrime.

The latest alert serves as a reminder for Nigerians to exercise caution online and ensure that all NIN-related transactions are conducted through legitimate and verified channels.
