The Oyo State Police Command has begun a manhunt for armed hoodlums who attacked the Nigeria Immigration Service Passport Office in Ogbomoso and carted away a rifle, ammunition and other valuables.
Police spokesman, Ayanlade Olayinka, said the incident occurred around 8:45 p.m. on Tuesday when about five attackers reportedly scaled the rear fence of the facility and assaulted officers on night duty.
“Findings from the preliminary investigation revealed that the assailants, numbering about five, gained access to the premises through the rear fence bordering a large expanse of bushland”, he said.
According to the police, the hoodlums assaulted two Immigration officers with sticks and other dangerous weapons before fleeing with a G3 rifle and ammunition, a mobile phone, a generator and a motorcycle battery.
“The injured officers have received necessary medical attention and are currently in stable condition”, Olayinka added.
He noted that tactical and surveillance teams have intensified operations around the area, while intelligence networks have been activated to track down the suspects and recover the stolen items.
The spokesman said the Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, has directed all operational and intelligence units to deploy every available resource to ensure the arrest of those responsible.
Olayinka further disclosed that the police and the Nigeria Immigration Service have constituted a joint task team to strengthen efforts aimed at apprehending the attackers.
