Ahead of former Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso’s formal defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), key political figures, including the party’s national leader Senator David Mark, have arrived in Kano State to witness the historic event.
Kwankwaso announced his resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) on Sunday, citing the current political trajectory of the nation as the reason for what he described as a “strategic realignment.” In a statement, he said:
“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect. I am profoundly grateful for the honour of serving as the Party’s National Leader and Presidential Candidate in the 2023 General Elections. This was not an easy decision.
“However, considering the nation’s political trajectory and the need for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation.”
Kwankwaso is set to be formally received into the ADC in Kano today, where he and his loyalists from the Kwankwasiyya Movement will be presented with membership cards.
Senator Mark arrived in Kano alongside other prominent political figures, including former Peter Obi, former Rotimi Amaechi, former Aminu Tambuwal, and former APC National Chairman Odigie Oyegun.
Political analysts suggest that Kwankwaso’s defection to the ADC could significantly boost the party’s coalition prospects for the 2027 elections, given his influence over Kano, one of the most populous and politically pivotal states in Northern Nigeria.
The move marks a major realignment in the country’s political landscape, signaling increased momentum for the ADC ahead of the next general elections.
