Okoye Reflects on Italian Success and Unwavering Allegiance to Nigeria

Udinese shot-stopper Maduka Okoye has opened up about the personal motivations behind his decision to represent the Super Eagles over Germany, the land of his birth. In a comprehensive sit-down with SportyTV, the 26-year-old goalkeeper provided a rare glimpse into his professional journey, detailing his evolution from a young prospect in the Bundesliga’s youth systems to becoming a mainstay in one of Europe’s most demanding leagues. Now deep into his third campaign in Serie A, Okoye expressed a profound sense of belonging and contentment with his current career trajectory in Italy.

The former Fortuna Düsseldorf and Sparta Rotterdam man was quick to dismiss any notions of restlessness, emphasizing that his time in Udine has been a defining and positive era for his development.

“I’m fine, thank you. No, it’s treating me very, very good. I’m very happy here. It’s my third season already and, yeah, having a great time here.”

Beyond his club exploits, Okoye touched upon the unique relationship he maintains with the Nigerian football community. Despite playing his trade thousands of miles away from West Africa, he noted that the passionate backing of the Nigerian fans has been a constant presence throughout every stage of his career. Whether navigating the early challenges in Germany or his subsequent move to the Eredivisie, the goalkeeper credits this international support system for providing him with the mental fortitude required at the elite level.

“Yeah, a lot, a lot. It means a lot that Nigerians always support you, you know. It started in my days in Fortuna Düsseldorf to Rotterdam and now in Udine, and they were always there. They support always from back home, and it means a lot. I’m very grateful and thankful.”

Looking toward the horizon, the Nigerian international remains focused on a “step-by-step” philosophy regarding his professional growth. He articulated a dual ambition: to reach the pinnacle of his personal potential as an athlete while simultaneously propelling his club toward the upper echelons of the Serie A table.

“As an athlete, I want to get the best out of myself. This is my goal. This is my dream. And, with this club, I want to finish the season as high as possible in the best way possible, and then, yeah, we see step by step.”

Central to his identity is a deep-seated connection to his Nigerian roots, a bond he attributes to a strong family upbringing that prioritized cultural heritage. It was this intrinsic link that ultimately dictated his international future, choosing the green and white of Nigeria as a tribute to his lineage. As he continues to thrive in Italy, Okoye stands as a testament to the global nature of the modern Nigerian squad, blending European technical training with a fierce pride in his African identity.
