Police have uncovered a major visa scam in Lagos involving fraudulent promises of Canadian and Australian work permits, leading to the arrest of four suspects and the loss of an estimated ₦500 million by over 100 unsuspecting Nigerians.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the arrests of Blessing Wefsutu (27), Chineye Christian (36), Archibong Udeme Ifereke (23), and Maurine Peter (25)—all staff of an educational consultancy firm operating out of the Ago Okota area.
According to police spokesperson CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the suspects allegedly lured job seekers with fake assurances of lucrative employment opportunities abroad, collecting large sums under the guise of visa procurement services.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects defrauded more than 100 individuals to the tune of ₦500 million through a sophisticated visa scam targeting hopeful migrants,” said Hundeyin.
The case was first reported at the Ago Okota Police Division before being escalated to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further action.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, emphasized the importance of public vigilance, urging Nigerians to verify the legitimacy of travel and recruitment agencies before making any financial commitments.
“The public must conduct proper due diligence to avoid falling prey to these criminal networks,” CP Jimoh said. “We are intensifying efforts to track down other accomplices still at large.”
He added that the police remain committed to dismantling fraudulent syndicates and ensuring justice for victims.
The four suspects are currently being held at SCID as investigations continue. Authorities say more arrests are expected as the case unfolds.
