Wumi Toriola Challenges Desola Afod Over Alleged Disrespect to Theatre Professionals
Nollywood actress Wumi Toriola has criticised Desola Afod following her complaint about being disrespected at a celebrity gathering, urging her to address the individuals involved rather than accuse theatre professionals as a group.
Toriola made the remarks in a video response after Desola, who disclosed that she is 44, recounted an incident in which she said she had been treated disrespectfully. Desola did not identify the person she accused.
Reacting to the complaint, Toriola questioned why Desola appeared to direct her criticism at theatre practitioners instead of naming the individual with whom she had a disagreement.
The actress also suggested that Desola could revert to her maiden name if she believed the Afod surname was contributing to the disrespect she described.
“If you think that the name Afod is giving you problems and disrespect, you can change to your father’s name or use something else like Desola Kilanko,” Toriola said.
She described Desola’s reference to theatre professionals as insulting, arguing that the comment unfairly implicated an entire industry in what appeared to be an individual dispute.
Toriola added that she had previously refrained from speaking out against Desola during an earlier disagreement because she wanted to avoid disrespecting her then-husband, actor Kunle Afod.
However, she said she could no longer remain silent, insisting that anyone who felt wronged should identify the person responsible rather than make broad accusations against colleagues in the entertainment industry.
The actress also pushed back against Desola’s comments about social status and image, saying people in the industry often present carefully managed versions of themselves in pursuit of fame.
Desola and Kunle Afod’s separation has previously attracted public attention, with reports of relationship difficulties emerging over the years. The latest exchange adds another layer to the public conversation surrounding the former couple and their relationships within the Yoruba movie industry.
