Vice-President Kashim Shettima on Sunday departed Abuja for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he will represent Nigeria at the Second United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS), scheduled to hold from July 27 to 29.
The summit brings together global leaders, policymakers, and key stakeholders to review progress since the inaugural 2021 event and push forward actions aimed at building resilient, inclusive, and sustainable food systems worldwide.
According to a statement by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice-President), Shettima will take part in several high-level dialogues, including a flagship event on transforming the global coffee value chain.
The Vice-President is also expected to join ministerial roundtables focused on public finance, trade, and responsible investment, in addition to participating in a range of side events, including field visits, networking sessions, and knowledge-sharing platforms.
Nkwocha noted that during a recent briefing by Nigeria’s summit task force, VP Shettima outlined three core priorities for the country’s delegation:
- Positioning Nigeria as a thought leader in African food systems reform.
- Strengthening international partnerships that align with Nigeria’s domestic agricultural goals.
- Promoting a private sector-led approach to food system transformation across the continent.
“The summit presents a platform to reinforce Nigeria’s commitment to reshaping food systems in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” the statement said.
The event is being organised in partnership with the United Nations, the Government of Ethiopia, and the Government of Italy.
Vice-President Shettima is expected to return to Nigeria upon conclusion of the summit activities.
