Thousands of Ukrainians took to the streets this week to protest the passage of a controversial law that threatens the country’s anti-corruption infrastructure, one of the key pillars of Ukraine’s democratic reform and its alignment with Western institutions.
The law, passed by Ukraine’s parliament and signed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday, curtails the independence of two critical anti-corruption agencies: the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO). According to the bill’s critics, the move could undermine ongoing efforts to ensure transparency and accountability in Ukraine’s wartime governance.
Protests erupted earlier the same day in major cities including Kyiv and Lviv, with demonstrators holding signs that read, “Protect the anti-corruption system, protect Ukraine’s future,” and “We are against it.” The rallies marked the first large-scale civilian demonstrations against the government since Russia’s full-scale invasion over three years ago.
Many Ukrainians view the independence of anti-corruption institutions as vital not only for post-war reconstruction but also for maintaining trust with international partners, including the European Union and the International Monetary Fund, both of which have linked financial and military support to good governance benchmarks.
Human rights organizations and transparency watchdogs have also raised alarm. Transparency International Ukraine warned that weakening anti-corruption bodies could reverse years of reform and jeopardize Ukraine’s EU accession talks.
