The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, has issued the Federal Government a fresh 14-day ultimatum to clear outstanding arrears owed its members, warning that failure to meet the demand could trigger an indefinite strike across universities nationwide.
SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, said the union expects the government to fully implement the financial commitments contained in its 2026 agreement with the association.
He said the continued delay and what the union considers inconsistent payment of the arrears had become unacceptable and could force its members to embark on industrial action.
The position formed part of the resolutions reached at SSANU’s 56th National Executive Council meeting, held at the Federal University, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, over the weekend.
The union said the agreement reached with the Federal Government clearly established the modalities for addressing the outstanding payments. However, it expressed dissatisfaction with the pace and manner of implementation, saying some of the arrears had been paid only partially while significant balances remained outstanding.
SSANU said the government must complete the payments within the 14-day period, stressing that it would commence an indefinite strike without further notice if the deadline expires without a satisfactory resolution.
The association also rejected the proposed concession of King’s College, Lagos, adding the issue to the list of matters requiring urgent government attention.
The latest resolution reflects renewed concerns within the union over what it regards as delays in implementing agreements reached with the Federal Government.
SSANU has maintained pressure for the settlement of outstanding financial obligations to university workers, with the union warning that prolonged delays are placing additional hardship on its members.
The 14-day ultimatum now puts pressure on the Federal Government to resolve the outstanding issues before the deadline expires, with the possibility of a nationwide industrial action looming over the university system.
