The Federal Capital Territory Council of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has directed its members to report to work as usual, distancing itself from the indefinite strike declared by the FCT Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over a dispute involving the FCT Administration and the Nigeria Union of Teachers.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the TUC said the strike directive was issued without consultation with its council or affiliated unions, insisting that it neither participated in the meeting that produced the decision nor endorsed the industrial action.
The NLC had, in a communiqué dated October 6, 2026, directed public and private sector workers in the FCT to commence an indefinite strike on October 7 over the dispute.
However, the TUC has rejected the directive, instructing its affiliate unions and members to disregard the strike order and continue their normal duties.
The council also warned against attempts to intimidate or compel its members to join the industrial action, urging anyone facing such pressure to report to the TUC FCT Secretariat.
It further directed affiliate union leaders to disregard instructions to establish strike enforcement committees unless such directives emanated from the TUC FCT leadership.
While urging its members to remain calm, law-abiding and vigilant, the council said any further instructions would be communicated by its leadership should the situation change.
The TUC also called on the parties involved to embrace dialogue and established industrial relations mechanisms to resolve the dispute, warning against further disruption to workers’ activities and children’s education.
