FG to Establish 3D Prosthetics Training Centre in Abuja

The Federal Government has allocated funds to establish a 3D prosthetics training centre at the Medical Rehabilitation Therapists Board in Abuja to strengthen rehabilitation services and improve access to artificial limbs.

The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Salako, disclosed this on in Abuja at a showcase of 3D-printed prosthetics technology.

He said the initiative, under a United Nations Industrial Development Organisation project funded by the Japanese Government, would support technology transfer, professional training and local production of prosthetic devices.

According to him, the technology uses digital scanning, computer-aided design and 3D printing to produce artificial limbs, potentially reducing production time and costs for patients.

Meanwhile, the UNIDO Regional Director and Representative in Nigeria, Philbert Johnson, said 200 amputees had been selected to receive prostheses, with 30 already fitted with artificial limbs during the training phase.

He added that 20 Nigerian prosthetists and orthotists had also been selected for specialised training by Japanese experts to strengthen local capacity and expand access to affordable rehabilitation services.
