Terry G: Performing at Political Events Doesn’t Mean I Support Any Party
Singer defends pre-inauguration concert performance, says he’s an independent artist just doing his job

Nigerian singer Gabriel Oche Amanyi, popularly known as Terry G, has clarified that his appearances at political events should not be mistaken for political endorsement.
Speaking on The Real Shareholders podcast, Terry G explained that he remains an independent artist and was simply doing his job when he performed at events hosted by political parties.
“As an artist, we are usually billed to perform. In the current economy, if you’re opportuned to even get a gig from a political party, you’re lucky,” he said. “So, respect to the party. But I’m just doing my job. I’m an independent artist.”
Terry G noted that fans have unfairly criticized him for participating in political concerts without considering that he never declared support for any party or candidate.
“At least, fans should have judged me based on what I said there. But they are now judging me based on what I did.
If I had said people should vote for APC, that’s a different thing. I went to do my job, just like my other colleagues. I don’t know why mine is different,” he added.
Backlash and Alleged Unpaid Fees
The controversy dates back to May 2023, when Terry G performed at President Bola Tinubu’s pre-inauguration concert held at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja. His appearance drew criticism on social media, with many accusing him of endorsing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a follow-up statement in November 2023, the singer called out the APC over alleged unpaid performance fees. He claimed that certain individuals hijacked the money intended for him after the event.
Despite the backlash, Terry G maintains that his role was purely professional and should not be misinterpreted.
