TCN Explains Apo Substation Transformer Fault, Assures Residents of Ongoing Repairs

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced that one of the 100MVA 132/33kV transformers at the Apo Substation in Abuja developed a fault in the early hours of May 22, 2026, leading to disruptions in electricity supply to some customers within the Abuja franchise area.
In a statement issued by TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the company disclosed that the transformer tripped at about 12:56 a.m. on differential relay indication while on no load.
According to the statement, an initial inspection revealed oil spillage around the transformer, prompting further technical investigations by TCN maintenance personnel.
The subsequent examination identified faults affecting the red and yellow phase 33kV bushings of the 100MVA power transformer.
TCN explained that repair efforts are already underway, noting that the red phase bushing has been successfully restored, while engineers continue work on the yellow phase component.
The company added that, following the incident, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) was advised to reroute electricity supply to customers connected to the affected outgoing 33kV feeders through alternative TCN feeders within its network coverage area pending the completion of repairs.
TCN assured affected customers that its engineers are working diligently to fully restore the transformer and stabilize power supply in the affected areas.
The company also apologized to AEDC and electricity consumers for the inconvenience caused by the incident.
