Nollywood actor Tayo Faniran has questioned the extent to which talent determines success in Nigeria’s film industry, alleging that visibility and career opportunities do not always go to the most talented professionals.
Faniran made the remarks during an interview on TVC’s eSplash, where he reflected on his experience in Nollywood and the factors he believes influence success within the industry.
The actor specifically challenged the perception that the producers regarded as the biggest names in Nollywood are necessarily the most talented.
“In Nollywood, the film producers you guys see and know as the biggest are not the most talented film producers,” he said.
Faniran suggested that what audiences see from outside the industry may not fully reflect how opportunities and recognition are distributed within it.
He also spoke about his own career, saying he believes his position would have been significantly different if talent were the sole basis for advancement.
“If Nollywood were strictly about talent, I should be far beyond where I am,” he said.
The actor further alleged that there is “a lot of rigging” in the industry, using the term to describe what he sees as an unfair process surrounding career opportunities.
Faniran did not provide specific examples or identify individuals in the remarks cited.
His comments add to an ongoing conversation about talent, access, recognition and career progression within Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
