Former England striker Alan Shearer has shifted his prediction for this year’s World Cup, now believing the Three Lions have what it takes to lift the trophy.
The Newcastle United legend previously questioned England’s chances but changed his view after watching their Round of 16 victory over co-hosts Mexico.
Writing in his BBC column ahead of England’s quarter-final clash with Norway on Saturday, Shearer said the team’s performance had strengthened his belief in their title prospects.
“There’s always hope with England at a major tournament, but that performance [against Mexico] has pushed us all further forward and given everyone, including me, confidence and belief too.
“Before I went to the Azteca Stadium, and watched us deal with everything that was thrown at us, I didn’t truly believe England could win this World Cup – but I have changed my mind, and I think everyone else has too.”
Shearer said England’s composure and ability to handle pressure in the knockout stage had changed his outlook on their chances of ending their long wait for a major international trophy.
