Rudeboy Says Going Solo Is Less Stressful Than Life in P-Square

Nigerian singer Paul Okoye, popularly known as Rudeboy, says his transition to a solo career after the breakup of P-Square has been relatively easy, citing his extensive creative responsibilities during the group’s years together.

The singer made this known in a recent interview with Lun Lifestyle TV, where he explained that working independently has not significantly changed his approach to making music.

According to Rudeboy, he handled songwriting, production and vocals during his time with the now-defunct duo, making the shift to releasing music under his own name less demanding than some might expect.

He described his solo career as less stressful, adding that he now enjoys greater freedom to make creative decisions without having to answer to another member of the group.

“Transitioning into a solo artist was less stressful for me. Because it was the same me that was doing everything in the group, with due respect,” he said.

Rudeboy added that although he still works with a team, the final creative decisions are now more firmly in his hands.

He said, “I am the producer, writer, and singer. So, moving as a group, it is still the same thing. As I said, being a solo artist is less stressful. Inasmuch as I have a team, nobody is going to question me. I have more creative control. It is easy for me.”

P-Square’s split and solo careers

P-Square, formed by twin brothers Peter and Paul Okoye, became one of Nigeria’s most successful music duos, earning widespread recognition for their hit songs and energetic performances.

The group first split in 2017 following disagreements between the brothers. They reunited in 2021 but separated again in 2024.

Since the latest split, both brothers have continued pursuing individual music careers, with Paul performing as Rudeboy and Peter releasing music as Mr P.

Rudeboy’s latest comments offer his perspective on the transition, suggesting that the responsibilities he carried within P-Square prepared him for the demands of working independently.
