Spokesperson of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Bolaji Abdullahi, has dismissed suggestions that Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, might return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying Obi “cannot take that risk.”
Abdullahi made the remark during a televised interview on Monday, where he addressed recent reports that the PDP is reaching out to Obi to rejoin the party.
“Let me say clearly, Peter Obi is in the coalition,” Abdullahi stated. “Regardless of what anybody is saying. But it is good to see that it has taken the coming on board of ADC to get PDP to begin to make some movements.”
He added that the PDP remains largely constrained, saying, “Everyone knows the jugular of the PDP is in the hands of the ruling party.”
According to him, Obi understands the political dynamics at play and is unlikely to risk returning to a party grappling with internal instability. “Peter Obi, more than anyone else, knows that he cannot take the risk of going to the PDP,” Abdullahi emphasized.
Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, was the PDP’s vice-presidential candidate in 2019 but left the party in 2022 to contest the presidency under the Labour Party platform. He has since become a central figure in Nigeria’s opposition politics, particularly among younger voters.
