Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has donated N20 million to victims of the devastating flood that recently hit Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State.
Obi made the donation during a condolence visit to the state on Monday, where he expressed deep sympathy to both the government and the people of Niger State over the tragic loss of lives and property.
The former Anambra State governor was received at the Niger State Government House in Minna by the Deputy Governor, Yakubu Garba.
The flood, which occurred last week, claimed at least 153 lives, with over 100 people still missing, leaving communities in mourning and hundreds displaced.
Obi Promises Direct Engagement with Victims
Speaking during the visit, Obi assured the government of his commitment to supporting affected families and pledged to personally visit the homes of the victims.
“I am here to stand with the people of Mokwa and Niger State in this dark moment. I pray for the souls of the departed and for strength for the bereaved families,” Obi stated.
He called for national solidarity and emphasized the importance of responsive leadership in times of disaster.
Deputy Governor Applauds Gesture
In his remarks, Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba expressed gratitude for the donation and praised Obi’s compassion for humanity.
“Your visit and your support mean a great deal to us. It’s not just the funds but your willingness to show up and be present for the grieving,” Garba noted.
The deputy governor highlighted the scale of devastation in Mokwa and urged both public and private stakeholders to emulate Obi’s gesture in providing relief for the victims.
