Security preparations have intensified ahead of Saturday’s Osun governorship election, with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps warning against any attempt to disrupt the exercise.
The Commandant-General of the NSCDC, Abubakar Audi, issued the warning during an operational visit to Osun State to assess the corps’ readiness and strengthen coordination with other agencies. Audi said the priority was to ensure a peaceful election, while directing personnel to respond firmly to anyone attempting to undermine the electoral process.
He also ordered officers to remain professional, respect the rule of law and avoid excessive use of force, stressing the need to operate within established rules of engagement. During the visit, Audi met with Governor Ademola Adeleke and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Adeleke expressed concern over alleged threats from political groups and called for adequate security deployment to protect voters and prevent violence during the election.
At the INEC state headquarters, Audi assured the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Oluwatoyin Babalola, that the NSCDC would protect electoral materials and facilities against vandalism and interference. The NSCDC chief also directed its personnel to maintain close coordination with other security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police Force, which is the lead agency for election security.
The corps said it remained committed to protecting voters and ensuring a secure environment for citizens to exercise their franchise.
