Former Super Eagles striker Osaze Odemwingie has recounted how an administrative blunder left Nigeria’s U-23 team struggling for kits during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Speaking with Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade, the former West Bromwich Albion forward recalled how Samson Siasia’s team progressed further than officials apparently expected, after the squad’s main kits had already been sent back to Nigeria.
According to Odemwingie, officials had seemingly anticipated an early exit and arranged for the team’s equipment to be returned before the tournament had properly begun.
But Nigeria advanced from the group stage and went deep into the competition, forcing the players to find alternative matchday clothing.
“At the Beijing Olympics with Siasia, we had to wear the girls’ kits for the second round and the rest,” Odemwingie recalled.
“Apparently, they thought we were not going to get far. They sent all the kits back home to give away or whatever. The Falcons, I think they didn’t make it through the next stage, they now left their kits.”
The unusual situation drew attention from opponents, with members of the United States team reportedly joking about Nigeria repeatedly wearing the same outfits. Some players eventually bought plain white shirts to vary their appearance.
“Then we made it out of the group and the American team is saying, ‘You guys are wearing the same clothes all the time’. They laughed at us.
“Some of us went to buy plain white T-shirts.”
Despite the setback, Nigeria reached the final and claimed silver after losing 1-0 to Argentina, with Ángel Di María scoring the decisive goal.
The story adds a humorous dimension to a memorable Beijing campaign that ended with Nigeria securing an Olympic silver medal.
