Nollywood actress Juliana Olayode has pushed back against the idea that women who desire marriage are desperate or lack purpose.
Olayode shared her views in an Instagram post, arguing that women should be allowed to pursue the kind of life they want without being criticised for their choices.
The actress said being interested in marriage does not diminish a woman’s ambitions, achievements or sense of purpose.
“Wanting to get married is not a personality disorder,” Olayode wrote.
She acknowledged that marriage comes with its challenges and that some unions end painfully, but noted that many people still see marriage as a meaningful relationship and hope to experience it.
Olayode also recounted an encounter at a salon where she overheard women criticising another woman for openly expressing her desire to get married.
According to the actress, she joined the conversation before later finding humour in the situation after seeing a “BRIDE” swimsuit gifted to her by a friend in 2024.
She stressed that women who do not want marriage or are content being single should have their decisions respected.
However, she said the same freedom should be extended to women who genuinely want to become wives.
Olayode noted that women can have different aspirations, including faith, purpose, career growth, financial independence, friendships, family and marriage.
She concluded by wishing women who desire marriage a good partner and a fulfilling union.
“Up Love! Up Marriage!” she added.
