NPFL introduces Friday night fixtures in new matchday schedule

The Nigeria Premier Football League is set to expand its matchday schedule with Friday night fixtures, giving fans more opportunities to watch top-flight action.

The new format will debut on October 16 when Shooting Stars host Ranchers Bees at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan, with the match scheduled for 6pm.

Selected Saturday and Sunday fixtures will also feature earlier kick-off times as the season progresses.

The revised calendar is designed to provide supporters with greater flexibility while creating additional opportunities for clubs and commercial partners to connect with their audiences.

Friday evening matches could also attract fans who are unable to attend the league’s traditional weekend afternoon fixtures.

Shooting Stars will be playing their second Friday home game of the campaign after opening the season with a 2-1 victory over Inter Lagos on a Friday.

The move forms part of efforts to modernise the NPFL’s matchday experience and broaden the appeal of domestic football.

With the league traditionally dominated by weekend afternoon kick-offs, the new schedule introduces greater variety to the competition’s calendar.

The NPFL is hoping the changes will translate into improved stadium attendance and stronger fan engagement when the new format gets underway on October 16.
